Tech companies have started hiring high school students for internships!
Youth, especially the high school students can be considered as an excellent alt-currency in the Silicon Valley. From the recent studies, it has been identified that a large number of tech companies have started hiring high school students in order to fill up the internship positions that are available. Facebook is a perfect example to prove the above-mentioned fact. In other words, hundreds of high school students get the opportunity to work for Facebook as interns every year. As a result, the age limit associated with the definition of “recruitable age” has also changed.
If you take a look at the stats for past five years, you would figure out that the number of high school students who get into the internship positions available in the tech companies has exponentially increased. This has created an ideal platform for fresh blood to come to the hyper-competitive tech industry. High school students grew along with the technology and the tech companies seem to believe that they are in a position to contribute in an effective manner towards the development of the company.
Recently Facebook hired a 17-year-old teenager named Michael Sayman as an iOS developer. The CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerburg himself selected Michael as a developer to Facebook. Michael got in as a summer time intern, but the talent he had assured a full-time position at Facebook as a developer. Michael is not a unique case and there are many similar examples for individuals like him. On the other hand, Facebook is not the only tech company that offers internship opportunities for the high school students. LinkedIn has also hired a large number of interns to fill up the vacancies that they have got. The same applies for AirBnB as well.
Most of the tech companies have the summer internship concept. Google took it to a whole new level and even movies have been created based on this concept. However, you should never believe that the high school students who get into the summer internship vacancies are underpaid. If you go through the reviews in Glassdoor, you will be able to get a clear understanding on how well they are being paid by the tech companies. However, they are not being paid with a six-figure salary as well.
Teenagers have now become the hottest chunk of the market. This fact has also contributed a lot towards the reason why most of the tech companies hire high school students. Some of the high school students in today’s world are equipped with entrepreneurial mindsets as well. For example, a teenager called Nick D’Aloisio, who was aged 15, developed his own social news platform. It was a success and he was able to sell it to Yahoo for $30 million after a couple of years. This clearly shows the potential that high school students have and the tremendous impact that they can create on the tech companies if recruited.
